While I Watch the Debate with Slow Joe

I had to take off my reading glasses in order to avoid reading the vomit-inducing "Context" provided by the USAToday feed I so poorly chose.

Not Enough Dead

"We made the mistake of trusting in the government's predictions that there would a sharp increase in deaths among elder citizens because of Corona," is how one Politiken wag imagined one funeral director's reaction. "And now the latest data now show that on the contrary, there have been fewer deaths under the pandemic." The Graulev undertaker was said to add that "it is a [government] failure without equal."

This seems about right, it could have been better had governments not decided to experiment with open tyranny.

Kung Flu and EXTRAORDINARY POPULAR DELUSIONS

Many years ago I read a book authored by Charles Mackay titled, "EXTRAORDINARY POPULAR DELUSIONS AND THE Madness of Crowds." He wrote that, "Every age has its peculiar folly; some scheme, project, or phantasy into which it plunges, spurred on either by the love of gain, the necessity of excitement, or the mere force of imitation. Failing in these, it has some madness, to which it is goaded by political or religious causes, or both combined."

The madness related to the Kung Flu also known as SARS-CoV-2, is a case in point. Michael Walsh wrote, "In previous pandemics, the bug was allowed to burn its way through the body politic, its toll just part of the cost of being human. So what’s different about this seasonal malady?

For one thing, it’s occurring in an election year, at the start of which the American economy was firing on all cylinders in a way it hasn’t in decades. When President Trump’s political enemies realized the Covid shutdown could be wielded as a wrecker’s ball against the American and global economies, they jumped at the chance.

For another, a society that has moved from “pay any price, bear any burden” to “if it saves just one life” is no longer capable of facing or dealing with reality. With atheism ascendant, the extension of life (except for that of the unborn, of course) has become the cardinal social virtue."

In many of the American states we went from let us all stay home for a couple of weeks in order to avoid inundating the hospitals to many months of arbitrary tyranny from bureaucrats and governors suborning the very Constitutions granting them authority.

On another note, if you like to read books you can find a great number freely available for download at Project Gutenberg. Therein you may find Mackay and many others where you can, "Choose among free epub and Kindle eBooks, download them or read them online. You will find the world’s great literature here, with focus on older works for which U.S. copyright has expired. Thousands of volunteers digitized and diligently proofread the eBooks, for you to enjoy."
