The actual scanning process goes something like this. I place the images on the scanner bed, acquire a preview, select and mark the individual pictures for batch scanning and then start the batch scan; repeat for next batch. Here is a screenshot:

Picture Scanning
I am digitizing some pictures that I brought from my mother's house. To digitize the pictures, I first connect to my loki4550 machine with X over SSH from my loki machine running Fedora. After I make the connection, using an xterm, I launch xsane which then scans the images from an HP Officejet Pro L7580.
The actual scanning process goes something like this. I place the images on the scanner bed, acquire a preview, select and mark the individual pictures for batch scanning and then start the batch scan; repeat for next batch. Here is a screenshot:
